Pedestrian hit, killed while walking to the mailbox in Durham

DURHAM, Maine (WABI) - Police say a man walking to his mailbox was killed when he was hit by a car in Durham.

It happened at the intersection of Royalsborough Road and Smith Farm Road around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials say a Freeport woman was heading southbound when she hit Peter Lowe, 85, who was crossing the roadway to check his mailbox.

Lowe died at the scene.

Investigators say he was wearing dark clothing and that the area had no street lighting.

The crash remains under investigation.
