A congressman demands answers from the state as to why the rebuild of the Francis Scott Key Bridge will be more expensive and completed later than first expected.

Maryland Rep. Johnny Olszewski wants to hear from the Maryland Transportation Authority and Gov. Wes Moore as to why the new bridge will cost nearly three times what was first estimated.

In a news release earlier this week, the MDTA said the cost will likely be anywhere from $4.3 billion to $5.2 billion. Original reports said the bridge would cost between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion.

“I have asked for and am expecting a full briefing to understand what is driving these changes and we need to be clear and transparent about which components of the reconstruction are becoming more expensive and why,” Olszewski said.
