In their November Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, the American Heart Association released a preliminary study showing that long-term use of melatonin supplements could be connected to heart failure — a connection that has caused much worry for millions of Americans who use the sleep aid.
Melatonin, a natural compound found in the body that helps to regulate the sleep-wake cycle, gained popularity after it was featured in Newsweek in the 1990s as a game-changing aid for jet lag.
In 2023, the synthetic recreation of melatonin was taken by approximately 5 million American adults and 4 million children at least monthly — that’s 2.1% of adults and 6% of children nationwide.
Researchers of the study from the American Heart Association looked at the electronic medical records of 130,828
