Manitoba Hydro says residents may hear loud, firework-like noises over the next several weeks as crews use implosion sleeves to connect new transmission lines in the Portage la Prairie area.
Hydro crews will be completing approximately 200 implosions over the next five weeks, typically setting off three at a time as part of the ongoing reconstruction of the double-circuit transmission line between Brandon and Portage la Prairie. The work will permanently replace 50 transmission towers that were heavily damaged during the October 2019 storm.
A temporary line built with wood poles has carried power through the region for the past several years. Earlier this fall, Manitoba Hydro began installing the permanent steel towers, with implosion sleeves used to fasten the new conductors.
