Chatham-Kent council approved buying the former St. Ursula school from the St. Clair Catholic district school board for about $1.7 million.

The purchase of 426 Lacroix St. will be funded from the affordable housing reserve through money from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.’s housing accelerator fund, staff said in a report recommending the move Monday.

A demolition tender will be issued to take down the building, prepare the site for future developments, and eliminate risks and costs of maintaining the existing structure.

Staff will request expressions of interest to redevelop the 1.8-hectare (4.4-acre) site into affordable housing projects, which may also include attainable housing, and report back to council with options next year.
