BED-STUY — COMMUNITY ADVOCATES IN Bedford-Stuyvesant are racing to save the Stuyvesant Mansion, the former home of pioneering OB-GYN Dr. Josephine English, following a court-ordered tax lien sale and inheritance dispute. The landmark, long used for gardens, camps and senior programs thanks to a stipulation in English’s will, could sell for $5 million, reports News 12 .
Organizers fear the forced sale would put the mansion in developers’ hands. Grow House NYC and the BLAC Land Trust say they aim to preserve the space for community usage. A Nov. 22 community forum at the mansion will address fundraising efforts to keep the property in local control.
Advocates describe the property as one of the neighborhood’s last free “third places.”
