Rapoport said that Cooks was a possible trade target before the deadline, but a deal with another team never materialized.
Cooks was signed this offseason for his second stint with the team.
The 32-year-old receiver had only 19 receptions for 165 yards in 10 games.
His playing time dropped to just 50 percent in the team's win over the Carolina Panthers.
The move makes sense for both sides.
It allows Cooks to sign with a playoff contender, while allowing the younger receivers Devaughn Vele and Mason
