Speaking at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum, President Donald Trump rejected the backlash from his MAGA base over H-1B visas for foreign tech workers, insisting companies building computer chip factories need that talent to train and strengthen the American workforce.
The president suggested that some in his base are being too rigid about the need for high-skilled foreign workers.
“They just don’t understand,” Trump grumbled. "People have to be taught this is something they’ve never done. But we’re not going to be successful if we don’t allow people that invest billions of dollars in plants and equipment to bring a lot of their people from their country to get that plant open, operating and working. I’m sorry.”
H-1B visas are meant to bring the best and brightest foreigners for high-skilled jobs that tech companies find difficult to fill with qualified U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
Trump has come under fire recently with his "America First" MAGA base for suggesting the U.S. needs foreign workers to come in and train American workers in factories being build that will make computer chips and other technologies.
"You can't open up a massive computer chip factory for billions and billions of dollars like is being done in Arizona and think you're gonna hire people off an unemployment line to run it," he said.
