Two women have been charged after a large-scale investigation into allegations of animal cruelty in northwestern Alberta.

Last month, more than 300 animals were surrendered from both locations of In The Woods animal rescue in the hamlet of Marie Reine, Alta., and the Municipal District of Smoky River. The area is about 411 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

In an update Tuesday, RCMP said the pair, aged 67 and 69, are each facing charges of willful neglect of animals, causing unnecessary suffering and permitting animals to be in distress.

Valleyview RCMP confirmed they became aware of reports of possible animals in distress in September and the investigation spanned several weeks.
