Two adults and four children — ages 7 to 14 — were traveling south in an SUV on the Maine Turnpike early Wednesday morning when their U-Haul trailer started to become detached and they pulled off on the right shoulder in New Gloucester, according to Maine State Police.
The trailer, now connected to their 2017 GMC Acadia only by the safety chains, was still partially in the roadway shortly before 4:30 a.m. when the two adults — a man and a woman — and two of the kids exited their vehicle to fix the issue, police said.
At that time, a 2015 Audi SUV struck the trailer and the GMC from behind.
