CANTON − A Stark County Common Pleas jury has convicted a Canton teen of murder and other charges for a fatal shooting in May.

The panel on Nov. 19 found Malachi L. Fortner, 18, guilty of murder, felonious assault and carrying a concealed weapon with firearm specifications in the shooting death of Stephon J. Dunn.

Fortner's attorney Ty Graham argued unsuccessfully that Fortner shot Dunn in self-defense.

Fortner did not show any reaction and glanced back at the people sitting in the seats behind him.

The jury deliberated from shortly before noon to about 1:15 p.m.

Stark County Common Pleas Judge Kristin Farmer said she would begin a sentencing hearing for Fortner at 3 p.m. on Nov. 19.
