There’s outrage from all the predictable quarters after Alberta Premier Danielle Smith invoked the notwithstanding clause regarding three pieces of legislation that were passed last year concerning transgender issues. The new laws ban trans participation in girls’ sports and require parental consent for a child to change pronouns in school. Another law requires parents to opt their children in for sex education in schools.
Unsurprisingly, critics are up in arms. Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi told reporters this week that the government’s actions are “unconscionable” and implied the government was engaging in a bullying exercise.
