CLEVELAND, Ohio — A suspect did not appear to have a firearm on him when an Akron police officer shot him last week , the city’s mayor said.

Newly released body camera footage shows police searching Corey Phillips, 36, after the shooting, but it does not show them recovering a firearm.

“It is our current understanding that he did not have a gun on his person at the time he encountered our officers, even though callers reported he was armed,” Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said in a statement.

The footage also shows less than 25 seconds passed between the start of police encountering a suspect and the officer firing more than a dozen rounds, several of which struck him in the torso.

Phillips remains hospitalized.
