ROCKFORD, Ill. — Two major utility providers are giving customers a little relief heading into winter.

The City of Rockford Government announced that Nicor Gas and ComEd have voluntarily started their winter moratorium on shutoffs two weeks early.

The decision means that residents who are customers won't be disconnected from utility service because of overdue bills between now and March 31, 2026.

The City said that those who need help are encouraged to apply for LIHEAP through an outreach event on Thursday at Brooke Road United Methodist Church Community Center.

The City said they hope the pause on shutoffs puts people at ease as winter approaches.
