A man convicted of first-degree murder for the 1992 killing of a 21-year-old man in Brockton — who also assaulted the prosecutor during his sentencing, then stabbed another man while in prison — was granted parole Monday.

Nathaniel Harbin, 53, will be released after serving 28 years of his life sentence in prison, the Plymouth County District Attorney announced. He will be released to a long-term residential program.

Harbin was 20 when he shot 21-year-old Travis Powell inside a Brockton home, killing Powell almost instantly. Harbin wasn’t arrested for nearly two years until he was taken into custody in New York.

He was convicted of first-degree murder on Nov. 14, 1997 after a jury trial in Plymouth Superior Court and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
