BOSTON —
It was a year ago inside an East Boston courtroom when Boston police detective Gregory Walsh heard the evidence against him.
Clerk Magistrate Joseph Faretra was weighing whether to issue charges and heard police say Walsh was "unsteady on his feet" and with "slurred" speech after a minor motor vehicle crash. The magistrate also heard Walsh's defense attorney, Scott Dunlap, talk about how Boston police did not conduct field sobriety or Breathalyzer tests.
The magistrate declined to issue the charge. That was November 2024.
But last week, a Suffolk County grand jury indicted Walsh on four charges: negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of property damage, operating under the influence and intoxicated licensee carrying a firearm.
