A man has been charged with breach of duty of care after allegedly faking the theft of his ute with his family dog inside.

Police charged the 43-year-old man after the German shepherd, Arnie, was found dead inside the vehicle nine days after the initial report.

Police in Wynnum , a bayside suburb of Brisbane, launched an investigation into a stolen ute and missing family dog after receiving a report on November 8.

Investigators were told that Arnie and a 2012 black Toyota Hilux were stolen from the family's Davidson Street home in the early hours of the morning.

An array of unsubstantiated sightings of Arnie in the wider Brisbane region were investigated by police.

But nine days after the alleged theft, the dog was found dead inside the ute by a member of the public in Fortitude Val
