New Delhi: Tihar Jail has introduced a new and unique addition, a gaushala (cowshed) inside the complex. It was inaugurated on Wednesday by Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena and Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood.

The gaushala currently has 10 cows, some were bought and some were donated. It can accommodate 10 more in the future. The Delhi government recently approved this move. Jail officials said that inmates, especially those who are from rural backgrounds, may be involved in feeding and taking care of the cows.

Calling it a form of “cow therapy,” Sood said the initiative could give inmates a sense of comfort. He said this approach may help reduce feelings of isolation among prisoners. Sood also proposed setting up a more advanced gaushala inside Tihar with proper government support and
