“Which country hosted the 2016 Olympics ?” Olympic gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu asks the assembly hall full of children. “It begins with B.”

To be fair to Ohuruogu’s audience – the student body at St John’s Bethnal Green CE Primary School – most wouldn’t have been alive to see her clinch the 400m sprint bronze in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Further back still are her Olympic debut in Athens in 2004, her gold in 2008, and her silver at London 2012 .

But when the medals come out, the kids are awestruck nonetheless.

“Can you bite it?” one child asks a slightly bemused Ohuruogu, referring to the popular celebration of athletes holding their medals between their teeth. “Please can you bite the medal?”
