SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Wednesday is ‘Utility Scam Awareness Day’.

While many of us had no idea there was such a thing as “Utility Scam Awareness Day,” Indiana Michigan Power takes it seriously and says there are a lot of scams that criminals cook up to take advantage of us.

I received two text messages just this week saying I owed money for unpaid Toll Road fees — except I never use the Toll Road. Those messages were actually a phishing scam.

Indiana Michigan Power has received over 300 scam reports from customers this year. These utility phishing scams involve a cybercriminal impersonating a utility company to pressure customers into paying unpaid bills to avoid disconnection.
