Today marks the centennial birthday of Robert F. Kennedy, affectionately known as "Bobby," who was born on Nov. 25, 1925. He was shot on June 5, 1968, after having won the California Democratic presidential primary, and died the following day. His assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian nationalist, remains in prison.
Kennedy served as Attorney General under his brother, John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963. The following year, Bobby Kennedy was elected as a New York senator. His eventual run for president in 1968 was met with mixed reviews. It led to the withdrawal of incumbent Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ). More bitter than LBJ was Eugene McCarthy, D-Minnesota, who had made a strong showing against LBJ in the New Hampshire Democratic Primary days before the entry of Kennedy.
