US President Donald Trump has claimed that he played a significant role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan by threatening both nations with a 350% tariff. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him to confirm, "we're not going to go to war." Trump made these remarks during the US-Saudi Investment Forum, attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, on November 19, 2025.
Trump has reiterated this claim over 60 times since May, asserting that he helped mediate a ceasefire between the two countries. He mentioned that he warned both nations about the potential tariffs, saying, "You can go at it, but I'm putting a 350% tariff on each country. No more trade with the United States." He claimed that both leaders urged him not to impose the tariffs, to which he responded, "I'm going to do it. Come back to me and I'll take it down. But I'm not going to have you guys shooting nuclear weapons at each other."
He further elaborated that he was prepared to implement the tariffs to prevent a nuclear conflict, stating, "I did this." Trump also mentioned that Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked him for saving millions of lives. He recounted a conversation with Modi, where the Indian Prime Minister allegedly said, "we're done," to which Trump asked, "You're done with what?" Modi reportedly replied, "We're not going to go to war."
Despite Trump's assertions, India has consistently denied any third-party involvement in the conflict resolution, maintaining that the ceasefire agreement was reached through direct talks between military officials. The situation escalated earlier in May when India launched Operation Sindoor in response to a terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians. The Indian government has emphasized that the understanding for cessation of hostilities was achieved through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations of both countries.
