A timely downpour of rain prevented the tragic crash at Walcha's demolition derby last Saturday from being much worse than it was, according to event commentator and Walcha councillor Gary Olrich.
"It could have been a hell of a lot worse," Cr Olrich said, speaking from the Walcha Community Support Day.
Before the shower, spectators, including children, had been pressed up against the fence watching the derby.
"There was a little bit of rain just for 30 seconds before the actual impact, and so people had moved away from the fence and the grandstand. There's a few blessings in that," Cr Olrich said.
There were no fatalities from the accident, and those in hospital are improving, but the town is still coming to grips with the tragedy.
