The European Union's (EU) top diplomat warned President Donald Trump that Europe and Ukraine need to support a peace deal with Russia for it to work, as a new U.S. plan begins to take shape, one that may require Kyiv to concede swathes of the Donbas region—its industrial heartland—to Moscow, among other major concessions.
"What we as Europeans have always supported is a long-lasting and just peace, and we welcome any efforts to achieve that," Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said as she entered a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Belgium, on Thursday.
"Of course, for any plan to work, it needs Ukrainians and Europeans on board. So, this is very clear."
