Avery Thomas was drafted by Gold Coast with pick 28 during the second night of the AFL draft on Thursday night, breaking the state's dry spell.

Gold Coast traded up for the pick which selected Thomas, who was described as a "bolter" on Fox Sports' coverage.

The 18-year-old joins fellow Tasmanian Lachie Weller at his new club and becomes the fifth Launceston Blues player in the league, following in the footsteps of Jake Kolodjashnij,
