The Gaston County Board of Elections will conduct a recount of the votes cast in Lowell’s recent city council race Nov. 19 after one candidate came up just two votes short of a win.
According to Adam Ragan, the director of the Gaston County Board of Elections, a recount in this scenario is common and in his opinion, a good idea.
Candidate Steven Rhyne said he decided to submit the request for a recount on Nov. 7 after the board of elections decided to decline several provisional ballots.
Provisional ballots are used when a voter does not or cannot present photo ID while voting in person or when questions arise about the voter’s qualification to vote, eligibility to vote in a given election, or eligibility to vote with a specific ballot style, according to the North Carolina State Board
