UN experts warned on Wednesday that El Salvador is misusing the Interpol law enforcement scheme to further its political agenda by issuing red notices against two Salvadoran human rights defenders in exile.

The experts highlight that the charges and red notices against Ivania Cruz and Rudy Joya, who are in exile in Spain, “appear to be without basis and in direct connection with their legitimate human rights work for UNIDEHC to support communities under threat and denounce the actions of the Government under the state of emergency declared in 2022.”

The state of emergency arose initially because of increased killings by criminal gangs. It has since been regularly renewed, raising numerous human rights concerns .
