What began in 2007 as a simple attempt to help a few students in need at one elementary school has grown into a huge weekly effort, with 60 or so volunteers packing bags with food for more than 500 Poudre School District students to take home each week.
The “McBackpack” program’s volunteers were doing double-duty Nov. 17, filling two bags of food for each of the 532 students identified through their schools as needing assistance. One bag of food for this week and another for next week, when schools will be closed for a weeklong break that includes the Thanksgiving holiday.
