Ican’t recall why a tunnel option hasn’t been pursued to replace the fallen Francis Scott Key Bridge ( “Key Bridge rebuild projected to cost billions more and take until 2030 to complete,” Nov. 17).

The Fort McHenry Tunnel cost $750 million 40 years ago, which, allowing for inflation, would be about $1.5 billion today. The current estimated cost of the Key Bridge replacement is $5.2 billion, and it’s not expected to be completed by 2030. So, a replacement bridge might be too expensive and could still be a target for a large freighter with a faulty steering system. The tunnel option should be publicly pursued.
