Cynthia Erivo’s fictional journey to the Land of Oz in Wicked: For Good felt strangely close to real life.

The 38-year-old Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the musical sequel now in theaters, recently spoke to NPR about the similarities between the character’s experiences and her own.

“There were so many sort of real parallels—the relationship with [Elphaba’s] father, the relationship to being in spaces that don’t really include you,” Erivo said. “The feelings you see in the movie are very real feelings.”
