SCHENECTADY — David Amram has played the French horn in the legendary jazz bands of Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. He composed film scores for “Splendor in the Grass” and “The Manchurian Candidate.” He helped create the famed jazz/poetry readings of 1950s New York with his friend Jack Kerouac and worked with Allen Ginsberg on the film “Pull My Daisy.” He has served as composer and music director for the Lincoln Center Theater and was appointed by Leonard Bernstein as the first composer in residence for the New York Philharmonic.
On Friday, Amram will celebrate his 95th birthday with a 7 p.m. concert presented by the Musicians of Ma’alwyck at SUNY Schenectady County Community College in Schenectady.
