(WREX) — Angie Walker, the homeless program manager for the city of Rockford Health and Human Services Department , explained the significance of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding for local homelessness programs. The funding, which covers Winnebago, Boone, and DeKalb counties, primarily supports permanent housing projects.

Walker said the HUD funding notice for fiscal year 2025 has been released, affecting nonprofit and government entities working with the homeless population. "About 89% of our funding here locally goes to permanent housing projects," Walker said, highlighting the importance of programs like permanent supportive housing and rapid rehousing.
