A Summit County judge has dismissed murder charges against 24-year-old Javion Rankin of Akron in late October for a lack of evidence. It came days before his trial in the death of 21-year-old Tyraye Carter was scheduled to begin.

Assistant Summit County prosecutors asked Common Pleas Court Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands to dismiss charges, including aggravated murder, murder and felony murder, which she did without prejudice, court documents show. If new evidence comes to light, prosecutors can refile charges.
