EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Two men will spend time in federal prison after making counterfeit money to spend in the Tri-State.

Officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office say 47-year-old Dennis Carter was sentenced to 20 months and 36-year-old Kyle Owens was sentenced to 13 months.

Both men pleaded guilty to producing counterfeit cash.

Between January and March 2025, officials say the pair created at least 30 fake $100 bills by altering genuine $10 notes with printing equipment and chemicals.

They used the counterfeit bills at numerous businesses in Indiana and Kentucky, receiving real currency as change.

As we reported, some of those businesses included the Evansville McAlister’s, Chick-fil-A, and Office Depot.
