An endangered Western lowland gorilla has been born at a Tennessee zoo.

Zoo Knoxville officials say it happened very quickly: 27-year-old Kumi went into labor around 8:10 a.m. Wednesday and about five minutes later she had delivered a healthy infant.

Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, and the zoo says these kinds of births maintain a genetically healthy and sustainable population for the future.

Officials say keepers have seen the troop interact positively with the pair, with father Bantu keeping a respectful distance and the younger females showing curiosity.
