LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The National Transportation Safety Board has released its preliminary report into the crash of UPS flight 2976 on Nov. 4. Fourteen people were killed and 23 others injured when the plane bound for Hawaii crashed after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport.
The report said there was evidence of “fatigue cracks” found in the left pylon of the plane. A pylon connects an engine to the wing of an airplane. On the MD-11, according to the NTSB report, engines are attached to the underside of pylons, which are then attached underneath each wing.
When the NTSB cleaned the fractured surfaces, the report said it also found areas of “overstress failure.” These failures happen when a part breaks apart and can’t handle the force or weight applied to it. According to the rep
