Students and staff were evacuated from a Fairfax County elementary school after a gas leak sent firefighters rushing to the scene in Chantilly, officials said.

Fire crews responded to Brookfield Elementary School on Lees Corner Road on Thursday, Nov. 20, after reports of a gas leak inside the building, Fairfax County, November 20, afternoon, Fairfax County Fire/Rescue said.

Firefighters said Washington Gas workers also responded to locate and secure the source of the leak. 

“The school was evacuated. No injuries,” the department said.

Photos from the scene showed multiple units staged outside the school as crews checked gas readings and closed off the road.

Lees Corner Road was shut down between Pennsboro and Tabscott Drive while firefighters and utility crews worked, officials said.

Officials said units were expected to remain on site for an undetermined amount of time.
