A 19-year-old has appeared in court on an attempted murder charge in connection with an early morning September shooting on a Dutchess County street that left a victim wounded, police said.
Malachi Cornwall, 19, of Poughkeepsie, was taken into custody on Wednesday, Nov. 19, following what investigators described as an extensive, weeks-long investigation into an early-morning shooting on Saturday, Sept. 27, the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department announced.
A day later, on Thursday, Nov. 20, Cornwall was arraigned on an indictment returned by a Dutchess County grand jury charging him with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to Dutchess District Attorney Anthony Parisi.
The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. near 313 Main St., where officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a victim with a gunshot wound to the hip, as Daily Voice previously reported.
According to the Dutchess County DA's Office, the victim later had to undergo surgery and stay in the hospital for several days.
Police initially detained Cornwall at the scene that morning and brought him in for questioning, but said there was not enough evidence at the time to charge him. He was released while detectives continued to investigate, according to the department.
That changed on Wednesday, when police announced Cornwall was charged in the shooting.
Cornwall’s bail was set at $500,000 cash, $750,000 bond, or $1.5 million partially secured bond. He is due back in court on Thursday, Dec. 11.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is urged to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police tip line at 845-451-7577. Tips can be made anonymously.
