Ontario has passed Bill 33, the controversial legislation that gives the province’s education minister broad powers to appoint supervisors to take over school boards.
The legislation was introduced after Education Minister Paul Calandra announced that five school boards — including Ottawa’s largest School board — were being placed under supervision , citing financial mismanagement.

The speed at which the legislation was passed has observers wondering whether charter schools are next on the agenda.
Calandra has been musing about eliminating the role of trustees and giving parents more control, said Kathleen Wynne, a former Liberal education minister and Ontario premier.
