The Seattle City Council moved Thursday to adopt the city’s nearly $9 billion budget for next year, signing off on the main tenets of outgoing Mayor Bruce Harrell’s plan while tweaking around the edges to provide more rental assistance, fill budget reserves and build a bigger cushion against possible federal spending cuts.
The council also took steps to protect some of its priorities — particularly related to homelessness and public safety — with a new administration soon to move into the top floor of City Hall and the council set to shift to the left after the recent election. Funding for graffiti abatement and the removal of homeless encampments, in particular, will be shielded from being redirected for other purposes.
The budget is roughly 7% larger than 2025’s.
