The family of a 19-year-old Connecticut woman who was killed with her friend in a Rhode Island crash is seeking support as they prepare to lay her to rest.
Ayanna Voyak, of Hartford, was killed on Saturday, Nov. 16, shortly after 11 p.m., when the car she was in skidded off I-95 in West Warwick, Rhode Island, and crashed into a tree, authorities said. She died at the scene.
Aisha Jules, 19, of New London, was rushed to an area hospital, where she died of her injuries. Four other passengers in the car were also treated for injuries.
Voyak's father, Tony, created a GoFundMe to help pay for her funeral expenses. The campaign had raised more than $5,500 toward its $6,000 goal as of Thursday afternoon.
"This has broken our hearts and destroyed us beyond words," he wrote. "We ask for help to bring our baby home to the city of New London and give her a proper service."
Tony Voyak told CT Insider that his daughter had recently graduated from the medical assistant program at Lincoln Technical Institute in Connecticut and hoped to become a nurse one day.
Jules was a student at Eastern Connecticut State University. In an Instagram post, the Caribbean Student Association said her "smile could instantly brighten any room."
"Her vibe was unmatched, her laugh was contagious, and she was genuinely one of the most friendly, outgoing, and social people you could meet. Being around Aisha meant you were guaranteed to have a good time. If you knew her, you knew she was the sweetest that was the Haitian in her."
