The House Judiciary Committee has accused a former U.S. Department of Justice prosecutor of obstructing an investigation in a criminal referral addressed to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi .

The referral alleges Thomas Windom, former special counsel Jack Smith 's onetime deputy, violated a federal law that criminalizes the "corrupt" obstruction of congressional investigations.

"Congress cannot perform its oversight function if witnesses who appear before its committees corruptly refuse to provide information that the law requires them to furnish," the referral reads. "The obstruction of a committee investigation undermines Congress's core constitutional oversight obligations."
