An outback cattle station owner has been sentenced to prison and ordered to pay more than $420,000 in compensation over a large-scale cattle theft in the Northern Territory.

Nicolas Kostowski, owner of Nenen Station on the Sturt Plateau near Katherine, pleaded guilty to stealing 116 head of cattle valued at $121,800 from neighbouring Manbulloo Station between September 2020 and June 2021.

This week, Supreme Court judge John Burns sentenced the 74-year-old to two years and six months in prison, which was wholly suspended.

Justice Burns said Kostowski was "motivated by greed" and his offending "involved a high degree of dishonesty".

"The offence was clearly premeditated and subject to planning," he said.
