BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The Upshur County Board of Education voted during a special meeting Thursday evening to close Rock Cave Elementary School at the end of the current school year.

The school will merge with French Creek Elementary School, with the consolidation becoming effective at the end of the 2025-2026 academic year.

The board also approved an amendment to the 2020-2030 Upshur County Schools Comprehensive Education Facilities Plan to include the closure of Rock Cave Elementary and its merger into French Creek.

Since Upshur County is currently under state control, Jeffrey Kelley, assistant superintendent with the Office of Accountability for the West Virginia Department of Education, was present to accept the proposal on behalf of the state superintendent.
