The majority of permanent hair dyes used in the US and Europe contain the aromatic amine p-phenylenediamine (PPD). A growing body of evidence has linked this organic chemical to severe allergic reactions, few cancer associations and even acute poisoning.

It plays a crucial role in making the dye resistant to washing and drying, ensuring the colour stays longer. Unfortunately, this same process also creates hazardous byproducts according to News Medical.
