Scottsdale school wins first championship since 2007
Sunrise Mountain's best girls volleyball season lacked the storybook ending.
Instead, the Mustangs were achingly close to that first state title, losing to top seed Scottsdale Chaparral 25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 12-25, 15-9 in the 5A final Nov. 15 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.
It was an evenivg of huge statistics, but one stuck out. Chaparral finished with 15 blocks against Sunrise Mountain usually lethal attack, while the Mustangs ended with just seven.
“They’ve got a great blocking game and it shut us down,” Sunrise Mountain Coach Brandi Jans said.
The Firebirds front wall led the Mustangs to feed their top weapon - a lot. Senior Addison Wiemann finished the match with 100 attacks,
