Tragedy struck UAB football just hours before the Blazers kicked off their Week 13 game against South Florida on Saturday. A UAB player allegedly stabbed two teammates at the UAB football operations facility, and offensive lineman Daniel Mincey was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder.
It's unclear what motivated the incident, and the names of the victims have yet to be released. What we do know is the victims' injuries "did not appear to be life-threatening," Birmingham Fire and Rescue told WVTM 13, the NBC affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama.
Saturday marks UAB's last home game of the season, and the Blazers decided to proceed despite the stabbing.
“We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition," a statement from UAB read, per ESPN. "Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect – another player – remains in custody, and an investigation is taking place. The team elected to play today’s game. UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”
The victims are currently undergoing treatment at UAB Hospital. Mincey, meanwhile, has been booked into the Jefferson County Jail after being apprehended by UAB campus police, WVTM 13 reported.
Who is Daniel Mincey?
A South Florida native and three-star prospect in 2024, Mincey began his college career by redshirting at Kentucky, then transferred to UAB in May. His brother, fellow offensive lineman Gerald Mincey, played with him at Kentucky after stops at Florida and Tennessee.
