WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal aviation officials said this year’s Thanksgiving travel rush is shaping up to be the busiest in more than a decade, with more than 360,000 flights expected to take off nationwide during the holiday week.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday is projected to be the peak travel day, with more than 52,000 flights scheduled, a level not seen in 15 years.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency’s workforce is fully prepared for the surge, crediting air traffic controllers and other staff for keeping one of the world’s busiest aviation systems running safely during a period of record demand.
