LINCOLN, Neb. —

The new and improved Herbie Husker was unveiled in 1996.

Fans seemed to like the new guy.

"I like him. He just has a little more class," said one fan.

"He looks more modern," said another football fan.

Herbie was in desperate need of a new look, especially after what happened to the last guy.

Husker mascots had always brought good luck on the field, but they hadn't always had such good luck once they retire. The one that had come before the 1996 version was damaged in freight, getting its face smashed in, and the one before him was burned in a fire.
