Komets goaltender Connor Ungar had already made two huge saves in the final minute against the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday night before he found the opening he and 9,491 fans at Memorial Coliseum were looking for.
Looking to put another exclamation point on his return to Fort Wayne, Ungar launched the puck the length of the ice towards an empty net.
It went wide left.
“I wanted it bad. I can’t believe I missed that,” Ungar said. “I had a chance there with like five seconds left, and I don’t know if I’ll get a better look than that. There was a wide open lane, and I just missed it. Heartbreaking.”
It was one of the only blemishes on Ungar’s night in a 3-1 win, registering 31 saves in his first start with the Komets after being loaned to the Greensboro Gargoyles before the season began.
